This 1999 firebird has gone through many upgrades over the years. from a 6-speed heads and cam car to a 385 stroker. In 2006 the car was put together with a 427 hyd roller ls7 style motor. The car ran 9.25 with a TNT ring kit. The cars owner got that itch and had to go faster. So over the winter of 2007 the car was totally disassembled and the cage was updated to a 25.5 chassis. This specification Allows a stock floored car to be certified to 7.50 seconds in the quarter mile. Next came the motor and turbo setup.
The car was built to run in the OSCA (www.raceosca.com) True Street class. This class is a stock suspension, DOT tire class. The rules state that the car has to run a drag radial or small ET street tire. The rules also state that the turbo for the car has a maximum inlet size of 85mm. The engine is a redline built 402 iron block motor. It has ETP LS7 heads. Diamond forged pistons strong enough to withstand the boost levels. The intake is a GM LS7 carbureted intake with a Wilson elbow and a Wilson throttle body.
The one thing that sets this engine apart from many other LS1s is that it has a front mounted distributor. The factory LS1 has coils for each individual cylinder. This system is perfect for stock cars but when running the RPM and power levels this car will see this system just wouldn't do. For the turbo we contacted Precision turbo. They built us a custom 85mm inlet turbo for our application.
At the beginning of the year the car was debut and ran a time of 8.68 at 164mph. Over the year with some fine tuning and a couple suspension changes the car ran a best of 8.10 at 178mph with the 85mm inlet. The car was taken down to the LSX shootout in Memphis. This is a shootout race of the elite LS1 powered cars. We competed in the prestigious Drag radial class. For this class we were able to run a 98mm Turbo. The car ended up finishing 3rd place and ran a best of 7.91ET. When the car returned to Canada we brought it back out for one last go at it. The car produced a 7.85 at 185mph pass. That is Canada's fastest LS1 record and also Canada's fastest drag radial car. The New owner Tom is looking forward to this year where we will be supporting a shinny new World Warhawk block and some other nice upgrades.
